Humanitarian laser eye surgery
The London Vision Clinic Foundation was established to invent a way of using pioneering technology to provide a permanent solution to those who need it most. We are inventing Humanitarian Laser Eye Surgery. This expands the toolkit of options to address refractive errors in the developing world and helps to eliminate preventable and curable blindness via high quality ophthalmic care, education and world-class infrastructure.
The same advantages afforded to London patients will be extended to Nepalese patients:
- Drawing on the surgical experience and expertise at the London Vision Clinic, the London Vision Clinic Foundation will benefit from the research that led to the development of a laser based treatment for presbyopia, called Laser Blended Vision. Laser Blended Vision will be offered in Nepal, as it is in London, and allow patients to have each of their eyes treated independently (one for near distance, and one for far distance). This increases the patient’s depth of field and allows them to see both near and far again. This pioneering surgical treatment counters the effects of ageing, and offers people a new lease on life where previously they would have been facing a “visual end of the road” to their working days.
- The specialists at the London Vision Clinic had a strong involvement in the development of the MEL 80 Laser – still the world’s most accurate laser (according to United States FDA tests). This same laser will be installed in Nepal.
- The London Vision Clinic team were also involved in the development of the Artemis™ ultrasound scanner. This is the world’s most accurate corneal scanner, able to map the individual layers of corneal tissue to the nearest micron (1,000th of a millimetre). High profile treatments for very high prescriptions, rely heavily on very accurate measurements of the cornea giving the ability to map individual layers of the corneal tissue. This tool for ensuring the safest and most effective laser surgery for very high prescriptions, is available for London Vision Clinic Foundation patients.
Training, knowledge transfer, and treatments have already begun
In 2010, The London Vision Clinic Foundation, partnering with the world’s leading humanitarian eye care organisations, has been involved in providing training to the Tilganga Eye Centre staff at the London Vision Clinic in London. Since then, The Foundation has already begun the delivery of world-class eye treatments at Nepal’s Tilganga Eye Centre.
This project has and will continue to be a stepping-stone to help eradicate unnecessary blindness in the developing world.
