Your Surgeons: Mr. Glenn Carp
Mr. Glenn Carp has undergone one of the most rigourous training programs of any laser eye surgeon in the UK. Mr. Carp, who had laser eye surgery with Professor Reinstein in 2006, was born and educated in South Africa. He qualified as a doctor in 1996 in Johannesburg. In regards to his own experience as a patient, Mr. Carp says: "I will not lie and say I wasn't nervous. But I watched over 500 surgeries and was confident having seen the results. The surgery was over and done with before I knew it and the recovery was very quick. I was back at work the next day and operating just three days after surgery. I can now see 20/12." He began his career in Ophthalmology as an Ophthalmic Senior House Officer, followed by a year spent as a Research Officer in Ophthalmology at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. In 2000, he commenced his specialist registrar training at the St John Eye Hospital in Johannesburg, Africa's largest eye hospital. Mr. Carp was the recipient of the Tetski Patterson Award for clinical research and received the Elli Dahan registrar of the year award in recognition of his outstanding performance over the four years of specialist training. "From a work perspective the thing I most enjoy is the patient interaction. Offering a medical service to patients is the fundamental part of what we do as doctors, what really gets me going is the time spent creating a connection and the interaction that follows that builds, forms, cements the doctor/patient relationship." Today, Mr. Carp performs laser eye surgery at London Vision Clinic and heads up the treatment of kerataconus patients by performing Cross-Linking treatments. "Knowing that I'm working to the best possible medical standard in the industry allows me to live in accordance with my values of accountability and responsibility. Knowing that I'm using the best available technology (beyond the industry standard), and being able to apply my medical treatments to the highest possible ethical standard is highly motivating." Mr. Carp is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Mr. Carp is a regular attendee at both national and international meetings and congresses and has delivered recent presentations at the 2006 ESCRS and the 2006 & 2007 International Congress of Corneal Cross Linking meetings. When he's not working, he enjoys travelling with his wife Deidre. He is passionate about fly-fishing, scuba diving, and photography. His other interests include Formula 1 racing and 4x4 excursions. He was selected for a prestigious one-year fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment pathology and surgery at London's Western Eye Hospital under the guidance of Miss Melanie Corbett and an 18-month fellowship in Laser Refractive Surgery at London Vision Clinic under the guidance of Professor Dan Reinstein.
