Approaching middle age: Surgery for presbyopia

No matter how much we try, we can’t deny the part of getting old that involves acquiring unknown symptoms, strange illnesses, and age related diseases.

The medical industry like to attribute terms to these feelings to make us feel extra special—arthritis, osteoporosis, hypertension. Once diagnosed with these, we enter into an exclusive group. The motto for the group might as well be, “Oh it’s a natural part of ageing, I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do.”

So while our minds generally continue to function at a high level, our bodies and organs buckle with the weight of time, leaving little or nothing we can do to stop them. However all is not lost, as there is one particularly important organ which can be repaired to astounding effect.

Our eyes are our precious lenses which allow us to interact with the world in all its glory. Change the way we see, and we change our realities. In the case of approaching middle age and experiencing presbyopia, that means we can continue to see the world through youthful eyes.

Let’s take a look at what exactly Presbyopia is and how it affects your eyesight.

A natural effect, experienced by everyone

One good thing about medical terms is that we don’t have to resort to more harsh descriptions. Presbyopia—literally translated as ‘old eye’—describes the natural effects of ageing on the eyes. It usually starts setting in between the ages of 42 and 45, affecting everyone, no matter of health, gender, or race.

As the lens inside the eye stiffens and becomes less flexible, and the muscles around the eye weaken, you’ll start to notice a reduction in your ability to shift focus from near to far, and vice versa. If left untreated, these symptoms inevitably lead to the need for reading glasses, bifocals, or varifocals.

In this short video, expert surgeon Mr Glenn Carp explains a little bit more about how Presbyopia affects the eyes:

A safe and lasting solution to Presbyopia

It’s often believed that Laser Eye Surgery is not able to treat Presbyopia. But it’s also often believed that Laser Eye Surgery is unable to treat high prescriptions, or that there is an age limit to having the surgery. The fact is the industry is changing rapidly, and what was thought to be impossible 5 or 10 years ago is today becoming common practice.

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is a revolutionary technique, developed by Professor Reinstein, which London Vision Clinic has been performing since 2004, in helping thousands reduce or even eliminate the need for reading glasses, bifocals, or varifocals for many years.

It does so by adjusting one eye to work better at a distance, and a little up close, while the other to work better up close, and a little at a distance. The brain quickly adapts to these changes and combines the perspective of each eye to give you excellent depth of focus and allow you to once again see both near and far with ease.

The results of our Presbyopia treatments speak for themselves:

  • Over 98% of PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision patients can read normal newsprint (‘N8’).
  • Over 90% of PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision patients can read the small print on medicine bottle inserts.

“I’m a 43 year-old ophthalmic surgeon…I had to find an excellent surgeon who provided me with sufficient confidence to proceed. I was doing more than 1,500 cataract surgeries per year and was tired of cleaning my spectacles after nearly each procedure. While attending a course at the London Vision Clinic, Professor Reinstein introduced us to PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision.”

“…I was really impressed by the results patients showed on the next day. This was not simple monovision. Flying back home I felt that the decision-making process was over for me. In a couple of months I had surgery at the London Vision Clinic. Now, more than six months after surgery, my vision is great, and I can read a newspaper at 15cm. Obviously, I am very glad I did it!”
