Treating Hyperopia (Long-Sightedness) with Laser Eye Surgery
In individuals with long-sightedness (hyperopia) the eyeball or cornea is shorter or flatter than it should be. As a result, the cornea focuses light at a point just beyond the retina (the photosensitive layer at the back of the eye). This causes the person’s near vision to appear blurry.
What is Hyperopia?

The early stages of hyperopia affect the near vision. However, later in life, both near and distance vision can become blurred. Often, patients with hyperopia are able to sharpen their focus on near objects, such as when reading; however, this requires a conscious effort which can strain the eyes and cause headaches.
Long-sightedness is relatively common, affecting about one in four people. This refractive error is often inherited and almost all babies begin life with hyperopia. In most cases, however, this hyperopia tends to reduce as we get older. Individuals who retain this hyperopia, or in whom the error develops, will likely require glasses or contact lenses by their mid-twenties or earlier.
Our Laser Eye Surgery Results with Hyperopia
100% of our long-sighted patients achieve 20/32 vision or better – that’s better than the UK driving standard (20/40)! The outcomes of our long-sighted patients are exceptionally positive compared to the data published in scientific literature or presented at major medical conferences. Treating Hyperopia with Laser Eye Surgery
Many patients with hyperopia will find that their quality of vision deteriorates over time. This is generally a normal feature of hyperopia; however, it can be very frustrating for patients – especially if they grew up with good vision and now find that they rely on glasses or contact lenses for close-up tasks.

In the video above, our former patient Ralf reflects on some of the challenges of wearing glasses and why he chose to pursue Laser Eye Surgery as a solution.
At London Vision Clinic, we can treat long-sightedness with the three main types of Laser Eye Surgery: PRK/LASEK, LASIK, and ReLEx SMILE. For most patients, this means finally waking “goodbye” to those pesky glasses and contact lenses – and no more headaches from straining to see!
This can obviously make an enormous difference to your everyday quality of life. Even simple things like showering, swimming, or playing with your children become more enjoyable and less of a worry. For those who enjoy sporting activities, the benefits are clear; while many formerly long-sighted individuals will find their new vision even helps in social situations – faces are easier to recognise and read without glasses!
