What Pre-Operative Tests will ensure my Suitability?

Will the clinic perform all necessary tests to ensure my suitability for Laser Eye Surgery?

A clinic’s pre-operative procedure is a useful way to determine the standards of your chosen clinic.

The pre-operative examination is the perfect opportunity to fully examine your eyes. This helps our clinicians to determine the health of your eyes and your suitability for different Laser Eye Surgery treatments.

Different clinics will have different pre-operative procedures, including various tests. Listed below are the pre-operative tests we perform at London Vision Clinic, but it should be noted that some of these tests are not routinely carried out at all Laser Eye Surgery clinics in the UK:

  • Refractions, including manifest refraction, cycloplegic refraction, and CDVA
  • Slit-lamp examination
  • Dilated eye examination
  • Intraocular pressure
  • Contrast sensitivity
  • PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision assessment (if you are presbyopic)
  • Night vision simulation
  • Corneal topography (including back surface, i.e. tomography)
  • Dry eye exam
  • Pupil size
  • Corneal thickness
  • Wavefront analysis
  • Very high-frequency digital ultrasound (if necessary)
  • Keratoconus screening

Once all of the necessary tests have been performed, your chosen clinic should be able to provide you with clear information on your suitability for Laser Eye Surgery.

If your provider tells you that you are not suitable for treatment, they should be able to provide you with a comprehensive explanation for this.

It is also important to remember that you may still be eligible for treatment at another clinic. You may want to ask if there is another Laser Eye Surgery provider that may have the necessary technology and/or expertise to treat you safely.

Some providers may not have access to the latest technology; for example, some lasers are more efficient at treating hyperopia; some practices will be unable to treat patients over the age of 40; or may only be able to offer the correction of distance vision.
