Scar Tissue and Laser Eye Surgery

Scar Tissue and Laser Eye Surgery

There is a vast number of factors that can cause concern for potential patients who are considering Laser Eye Surgery. One of the more uncommon issues – but one we continue to see – is the presence of scar tissue on the eyes.

Scar tissue can occur on any part of the body – including the eyes – for any number of reasons. For example, past trauma such as car or sporting accidents or as a result of certain medical conditions.

Scarred ocular tissue can create a number of problems, including blurred and distorted vision and discomfort in the affected eye. In some cases, having scar tissue on the eyes can affect a patient’s suitability for Laser Eye Surgery; however, thanks to modern innovations in laser technology, it is now possible to operate in a growing number of cases. As a result, many affected patients are now experiencing major improvements in their vision.

One such technological advancement is the development of the Artemis Insight 100 VHF digital ultrasound scanning technology. This bit of kit allows us to accurately determine the depth and extent of scarring – and any other imperfections – in the cornea. London Vision Clinic is one of the few clinics in the world to use this technology.

The Artemis ultrasound scanner, which was developed by Professor Dan Reinstein with colleagues at Cornell University, is able to measure individual corneal layers in 3D to the measure of 1 micron precision (that’s 100th the width of a human hair). This is just one of the many reasons why London Vision Clinic is one of the most renowned complication repair clinics in the world.

An insight from a Laser Eye Surgery patient with scar tissue

One of our patients, Irene, wasn’t optimistic about being eligible for Laser Eye Surgery – let alone seeing dramatic results from treatment. Irene had experienced poor vision as a result of a firework-related accident when she was a child that left her with permanent scar tissue on her eyes.

However, as Irene went through the various tests, measurements and scans to determine her suitability for treatment, she became increasingly confident in the process and the potential results.

Soon afterwards, Irene met with her laser eye surgeon (in this case Professor Reinstein) to talk about the procedure and her doubts and concerns. It wasn’t long before she was fully on-board and looking forward to having the surgery.

As Irene tells in her five-star TrustPilot review of London Vision Clinic: “After my next day appointment with Prof Reinstein I couldn’t believe how calm I felt about agreeing to go ahead (so not like me) and I had complete faith in Professor Reinstein.”

As expected, the surgery was another success story and Irene was thrilled with the results, labelling it a “life-changing” experience.
