A Friend is Never Far Away: Join the Extended London Vision Clinic Family
Throughout history, humans have come up with countless theories, some
to explain the everyday questions we have about the world around us, and some that might appear to have been plucked from thin air for a bit of fun.
One such theory is the “six degrees of separation” theory – the idea that any two people on Earth are six or fewer social connections apart.
The theory is believed to have originated in Frigyes Karinthy’s 1929 short story “Chains”, a study on the associations that link us all together. This was later built upon by a 1960s experiment which involved sending packages to a target through a chain of acquaintances. The results showed that the average length of the chain was between five and seven steps.
Of course, this doesn’t really prove the theory. Nonetheless, similar studies have mimicked the findings and even suggest that the degree of separation between individuals could be lower. But no matter whether we know the “six degrees of separation” theory to be true or false, most of us will likely have an experience that has made us believe in it, at least a little bit.
And patients of the London Vision Clinic are no exception.
The Amazon Connection
As one of the leading providers of Laser Eye Surgery, it is no surprise that our Harley Street clinic attracts people from all over the globe. Indeed, many of our patients travel to London specifically to have treatment from one of our expert surgeons.
Still, you might think it unlikely that two patients from different countries would ever meet – unless they were both attending one of our clinic socials!
But alas, that is exactly what happened to two of our past patients, on the Amazon River, no less!
Back in 2009, one of our lovely patients, Janice, decided to visit London Vision Clinic to have her vision corrected. Having recently lost her husband, Janice decided to embark on her long-held dream adventure – a tour of Peru. But there was one thing standing in her way: She wanted to experience the sights of the Amazon and beyond without the inconvenience of her pesky varifocal glasses.
Suffice it to say, Janice’s treatment went as planned, and she was able to ditch her specs in our charity jar, which still sits proudly on the counter of our Harley Street clinic today! So, there was nothing left to do but head off on her adventure, which included a tour of the historic Inca settlement of Machu Picchu and a boat journey on the Amazon River.
A Chance Encounter
While enjoying the results of her Laser Eye Surgery treatment, reading her book on the deck of the boat, Janice was approached by another passenger. Having noticed that Janice was reading unencumbered by reading glasses (a rare sight for those of us over 50!), and wanted to know how.
Of course, Jan happily explained that she had “new eyes” after her recent treatment. Having raved about the treatment she received to correct her presbyopia, she proudly recalled the moment she placed her glasses in our famous jar of discarded frames. At this point, she was approached by another passenger.
With an American accent, Janice’s new conversation buddy enquired whether the clinic in question was the London Vision Clinic. And would you believe it? Her fellow passenger was another past patient of ours called Doug, who had travelled all the way from his home in Los Angeles for the procedure!
