8 Things You Should Avoid When Wearing Glasses
Getting your first pair of glasses after struggling with blurry vision can feel like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. But after a while, the true implications of being buckled to external visual aids will begin to become apparent. Not only does wearing glasses mean you are essentially renting your vision, but you’re also signing away your ability to do many simple and enjoyable activities.
That doesn’t sound like the good deal you thought you were getting, does it?
Unfortunately, there are all manner of things that you will want to avoid if you’re a glasses-wearer. But not all of them will be as easy to avoid as you might wish! Let’s take a look.
1. Take a shower
If you rely on glasses for your vision, even something as simple as taking a shower can turn into an obstacle course. Stepping into a slippery, wet shower and correctly telling apart the shampoo and body wash – all with impaired vision – is certainly a tall order. But it’s not like you can keep skipping your showers, is it?
Of course, you can opt for a bath instead. But that’s not always practical if you’re rushing to get to work in the morning!
2. Enjoy a hot beverage
Nothing beats that first hot coffee of the day, or a relaxing herbal tea or hot chocolate in the evening. But even this can be interrupted by those pesky glasses.
Your beverage might be best enjoyed hot, but the steaming liquid can become troublesome when it causes your glasses to fog up, leaving you with a blurry view of the world. So much for that stress-relieving relaxation time!
3. Have a relaxing nap
Being asleep is the one point in the day when we don’t need to rely on our eyes. But while this is all well and good when we’re off to bed until morning, taking a nap may not be so peaceful.
If you take off your glasses before you fall asleep, there’s always the chance you will forget where you’ve put them. Of course, this is almost preferable to accidentally falling asleep while wearing them and waking up with unflattering marks all over your face and – if you’re really unlucky – bent or broken frames!
4. Go to the beach
Most people love a trip to the beach. Whether it’s an impromptu day trip to the coast or a pre-planned holiday in the sun, the beach offers us a time to relax and unwind. But if you wear glasses, it can just mean more headaches.
You might be fully prepared with your new pair of pricey prescription sunglasses, but this only means you’ll be constantly on guard in case of damaging them. Going for a swim means avoiding the big waves (where’s the fun in that?), and even when taking a nice stroll on the beach you risk dropping them. Maybe it’s best to just sit on your towel all day.
5. Do anything remotely active
Glasses have come a long way since their invention hundreds of years ago. They may be more sturdy than ever before, but that doesn’t mean they will stay glued to your face. In fact, their instability can prevent you from taking part in many activities, at least with optimum vision.
Going to the gym, jogging in the park, or simply running for the bus can cause your glasses to jump off your face without warning. Even bending over to pick something up requires planning. Then again, you might be grateful for the excuse not to exercise.
6. Cook anything
Making a Sunday roast for the family, cooking up a storm on Christmas day, or simply sticking a pizza in the oven can all end in the same way when you’re a glasses-wearer. Constantly removing your glasses to wipe away the condensation that has gathered from the cooking temperatures.
7. Put on makeup
For many, putting on makeup is a part of their everyday routine. But putting on makeup while you’re wearing glasses can present more unique challenges.
You might be fine while applying face products like your concealer or blusher, but when it comes to tackling your eyeliner or mascara, you’re faced with a problem. Perhaps you’ll try balancing your glasses on the tip of your nose while you reach over the rims. Then again, maybe you’ll end up with wonky eyeliner that you just can’t seem to get right…
8. Take a normal photo
This might not have been the top of the list of your concerns when it comes to wearing glasses, but these pesky visual aids sure can make it difficult to get a good picture.
They can attract the glare of the sun, or even the flash of the camera, leaving you eyeless. Or if you’re the one taking the picture, especially on a traditional camera, they act as a barrier between you and your subjects. Either way, the chances of getting the money shot are much depleted.
