Counter the Effects of Presbyopia with PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision
For many years, Laser Eye Surgery was considered powerless against the effects of ageing on our eyes. But this limit was debunked many years ago – and London Vision Clinic’s founder, Professor Dan Reinstein pioneered the way. With PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision, it is possible to roll back the years on your ageing eyes, potentially ridding you of reading glasses, bifocals, or varifocals for years to come.
This revolutionary treatment has become an increasingly popular alternative to external visual aids or lens surgery – but it isn’t available at all Laser Eye Surgery clinics. In fact, London Vision Clinic was the first, and remains one of the only, clinic in the UK to offer Laser Eye Surgery for presbyopia.
To date, thousands of people have already benefitted from this unique laser treatment, which we have offered for more than 20 years! So, are you ready to address the effects of presbyopia?
Overcoming Presbyopia
Presbyopia – which translates literally to “ageing eyes” – is a natural part of ageing. Just like every other part of our bodies, our eyes begin to change over time. While for our hair, this might mean turning grey, our knees might get weaker, and our skin might lose some of its elasticity, our eyes undergo their own ageing process.
As we get older, the natural, crystalline lenses at the front of our eyes begin to stiffen. This occurs as a result of the continuous development of cells, which, over time, causes the lenses to become less flexible. At the same time, the muscles around the lenses, which once helped us switch focus between different distances with ease, begin to weaken. As a result, we find it increasingly difficult to focus on near objects. This makes performing close-up tasks, such as reading or sewing, harder as the condition progresses.
Unfortunately, we cannot (at least at the moment) stop presbyopia from sneaking up on us.
But there are things we can do to counter its effects.
Traditionally, this has meant turning to reading glasses – or if you require correction across multiple distances, bifocals or varifocals. But with development in the field of refractive surgery came alternative options.
Clear Lens Exchange
This includes lens surgery – known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Clear Lens Exchange (CLE). This procedure involves removing the natural lens from the eye and replacing it with a synthetic one known as an intraocular lens (IOL). These lenses are specially selected to fit your prescription, allowing your refractive error to be corrected without the need for external visual aids.
Clear Lens Exchange can be extremely effective and even prevents the formation of cataracts later in life; however, it can be more invasive and more costly than alternatives.
Overcoming Presbyopia with Laser Eye Surgery
PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is a less invasive option when compared to Clear Lens Exchange. It does not require the replacement of the eye’s natural lens and, like standard LASIK, the procedure can be performed in just a matter of minutes.
It involves adjusting the eyes in different ways. While one eye is adjusted to see mostly at distance and a little close up, the other eye is corrected in the opposite way: mostly close up and a little distance. In the vast majority of patients, the brain is then able to combine these two images to provide a greater depth of vision and an all-round improvement in visual acuity. For most people, this means being able to ditch those pesky reading glasses for years to come!
- Over 98% of PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision patients can read normal newsprint (‘N8’).
- Over 90% of PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision patients can read the small print on medicine bottle inserts.
At London Vision Clinic, we’re able to treat up to 97% of presbyopic patients using PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision. In contrast, Monovision correction, which involves correcting one eye for distance and one eye for close up, is only tolerated in around 60% of patients.
So, while we might not be able to stop presbyopia in its tracks, we can certainly roll back the years on the effects of ageing. Get in touch with one of our friendly clinic coordinators or Book a Consultation today to learn more!
