Glenn Carp Tells Us About His Laser Eye Surgery Experiences
Mr Glenn Carp has become renowned as one of the top Laser Eye Surgeons in the world. We’re proud that Mr Carp chose to hone his craft here at London Vision Clinic, where he has helped hundreds of patients realise their dream of ditching their glasses and contact lenses. But how did he get where he is?
In this article, Mr Carp tells us about his Laser Eye Surgery experiences, from his ophthalmic training to his own Laser Eye Surgery treatment.
Mr Carp On His Ophthalmic Training
Glenn always knew he wanted to work in ophthalmology: “All the way through medical school, my main focus was to become an Ophthalmic Surgeon,” he recalls.
“I went to medical school, being fortunate enough to have a bit more direction than the average person who I was at school with, knowing that my goal, once finishing medical school, was to go on and qualify as an eye surgeon.”
Having undergone four years of specialist training at Africa’s largest eye hospital (Glenn was born and raised in South Africa), he eventually took up a position as an Ophthalmic Senior House Officer at Johannesburg Hospital.
From there, he decided to continue his training to specialise in Laser Eye Surgery.
“Through the process of becoming an eye surgeon, one is exposed to various aspects of ophthalmology, and I think it was the precision and the attention to detail that one needs with Laser Eye Surgery that has driven me in that direction.
“In order to become a laser eye surgeon, one obviously has to go through medical school, become a doctor, you then specialise in ophthalmic surgery.
“It then requires another couple of years of super-specialising, if you want to call it that, through the method of doing fellowships specifically targeted to working in this field.”
Eventually, this aim brought Mr Carp to London Vision Clinic – one of the leading Laser Eye Surgery clinics in the world.
Mr Carp on the best level of care at London Vision Clinic
Glenn’s time at London Vision Clinic started with an 18-month fellowship, after previously studying alongside our founder, Professor Dan Reinstein. Having demonstrated impressive skills in the field, Glenn was offered a permanent position at our clinic in 2006, where he has worked ever since!
So, what made him stick around? Perhaps it was our dedication to providing treatment to as many people as possible – even those with complicated prescriptions.
“There is very little that we can’t deal with here at the London Vision Clinic in terms of difficult cases, patients with exceptional circumstances at the end of the day.”
As Mr Carp notes, this commitment to being the best isn’t a necessity in the Laser Eye Surgery field:
“Most doctors can learn to become laser eye surgeons, theoretically, overnight, once they have an ophthalmic degree. It is just a question of learning a new procedure and then getting on with it.
“However, the surgeon who wants to try and offer the best, best level of care to his patients, will take the extra mile, or in my case two, and spend a year or two spending a little bit more time focusing specifically in an area of excellence with an expert.”
And that’s exactly what Mr Glenn Carp has achieved – and more! – during his time at the London Vision Clinic.
“Through my studies, I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with [Professor Reinstein] so that nowadays my level of care is, I would like to say, at the top of my game.”

Mr Carp on the benefits of Laser Eye Surgery
Since its introduction to the masses in the early 1990s, hundreds of thousands of people have undergone Laser Eye Surgery. For each and every one of these patients, the benefits of the treatment are different.
“Laser Eye Surgery is a benefit for anybody, whether you are minus a half or minus ten, plus six. I myself have had Laser Eye Surgery, and for me, the advantages are numerous.
“When it comes to sporting activities, there’s a lot more freedom. When it comes to activities where I need to wear sunglasses, it’s not a question of needing prescription sunglasses anymore. And, of course, just in everyday life!”
