PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is London Vision Clinic’s recommended treatment for presbyopia (natural ageing of the eyes) and aims to correct both near and distance vision, giving the patient an excellent visual range. London Vision Clinic was the first clinic in the UK to offer PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision. A lead medical consultant to Carl Zeiss Meditec, Professor Reinstein developed PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision back in 2004, which was later implemented by Carl Zeiss Meditec into their laser systems in 2009.

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia literally translates as ‘old eye’, and refers to the natural process of ageing that eventually affects everybody’s reading vision. If you have developed presbyopia you may find, for example, that you now need to hold a menu further away in order to read it. This is because, starting in early middle age, the lens inside the eye begins to lose it’s ability to change shape and provide the ‘zoom’ required to focus from distance to near and back. Nobody is immune from this condition, and unchecked it inevitably means reading glasses, bifocals or varifocals.

You may have heard that laser eye surgery is powerless against the effects of ageing on the eye. However, since 2004, London Vision Clinic have offered PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision – a minimally invasive procedure, which is suitable for around 97% of patients. While many clinics resort to implanting synthetic lenses inside the eye (a much more invasive and higher risk procedure), London Vision Clinic use PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision to help patients achieve excellent vision without the compromises or increased risk inherent in other presbyopia treatments.

What is PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision?

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is an evolution of LASIK laser eye surgery, which can significantly reduce, or even eliminate, the need for reading glasses, bifocals or varifocals for many years.

Amazingly, already over 7,000 patients have benefited from this remarkable treatment.

In this video, Ken, a patient, recalls his experiences on the day of his PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision procedure.

Key advantages of using the PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision procedure

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision adjusts each eye in different ways. One eye is adjusted to see mostly at distance, and a little close up, while the other is the opposite: mostly up close and a little at distance. In most people, the brain compensates for this quickly, combining the two images to give much greater depth of vision, and an all-round improvement in visual acuity that means most patients can throw away those infuriating reading glasses. It is a significantly less invasive (and therefore safer) procedure than artificial lens implantation, and it does not require the same compromises as IOLs (where multifocal IOLs can degrade the quality of the vision). Moreover, it is very accurate, and it can be adjusted as the eyes age further:

  • Over 98% of PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision patients can read normal newsprint (‘N8’).
  • Over 90% of PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision patients can read the small print on medicine bottle inserts.

Laser Blended vision v Monovision

After surgery, a patient reads a reading chart to check his results following PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision treatment to treat presbyopia.

Laser blended vision is not to be confused with monovision, which uses uses contact lenses(or older laser systems) to make one eye focused on near and one eye focused on distance. This is a far less sophisticated solution, suitable for only around 60% of patients.

In comparison, studies have also shown that PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is appropriate for 97% of people. So, while we may not be able to stop the ageing process in its tracks, we can make it much more comfortable and convenient for almost everyone.
