How Our Laser Eye Surgery is Different: Pioneering the Future

Since the procedure was developed in the 1980s, many people have been told that Laser Eye Surgery isn’t an option for them. But while this might have been the case at some point, the chances are, this evaluation is no longer valid.

That’s because the Laser Eye Surgery field has been continuously advancing over the years. And at London Vision Clinic, we’re proud to be world-leaders in this innovation.

At our Harley Street clinic, not only do we hold ourselves to delivering the highest standard of care and treatment – we are also pioneers in developing the techniques and technology that continue to reshape the Laser Eye Surgery field.

Our clinic is rare in having its own laser treatment research team. This team of experts continuously analyse our results to identify ways we can refine our laser vision correction techniques for even better results. For many years, we have also had a close association with Carl Zeiss Meditec, manufacturers of world-class optical and laser equipment.

Our very own founder and expert surgeon, Professor Dan Reinstein, has worked alongside Carl Zeiss Meditec on the development of the MEL 90 laser – the world’s most accurate laser (according to United States FDA tests).

Moreover, Professor Reinstein has developed some of the most innovative technology and techniques in the field. This includes cutting-edge corneal mapping software, life the Artemis Insight 100 VHFU Scanner, which enables our experts to perform advanced correction techniques without compromising patient safety.

Professor Reinstein was also heavily involved in the development of revolutionary Laser Eye Surgery techniques, PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision and ReLEx SMILE. These treatments have helped to make Laser Eye Surgery an option for more patients than ever before.

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision

As we get older, it’s natural to notice changes in our bodies – and oue eyes are no exception. Over the years, the eyes’ lenses begin to stiffen, becoming less flexible, and the muscles that usually allow them to shift with ease between near and distance vision become weaker. This process is known as presbyopia, or “ageing eye.

This refractive error is traditionally corrected with reading glasses or varifocal lenses. However, in 2004, our Medical Director, Professor Reinstein, developed an alternative that could counter the effects of ageing. PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision adjusts each eye differently, increasing the depth of field and allowing you to see both near and far. This is much more effective, and suitable for many more people than traditional monovision. For most patients, it can even means an end to reading glasses.

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision was first offered at London Vision Clinic in 2004, and was later implemented by Carl Zeiss Meditec to their laser programming which became commercially available in 2009.

High Profile Treatments

If you have a high prescription, you may have been told that Laser Eye Surgery can’t help you. In these cases, surgeons have instead traditionally relied upon lens surgery, a procedure that involves surgically implanting contact lenses into the eye. However, at London Vision Clinic, we’ve pioneered safe and effective treatments that can correct even very high prescriptions.

Thee high-profile treatments rely on incredibly accurate measurements of the cornea, ensuring surgery is performed within safe limits. We are able to achieve this high degree of accuracy thanks to the Artemis Insight 100™ ultrasound scanner. As the world’s most accurate corneal scanner, the Artemis is able to map the individual layers of corneal tissue to the nearest micron (around 1/1000th of a millimetre). This innovative technology was co-invented by Professor Reinstein, and London Vision Clinic was the first clinic in the UK to have one at our disposal.

I was extremely short sighted and had spent my life struggling but coping pretty well. I was nervous about the procedure but it was not as bad as I had anticipated. Believe me, it is probably one of the best things I have ever done. Minus 12 to 20-20!

Artemis Insight 100™ Technology

The Artemis Insight 100™ Technology is known for its superior imaging and microbiometric capabilities. This ground-breaking technology allows us to gather incredibly accurate measurements of the cornea, which in turn greatly enhances patient safety and refractive outcomes. Creating an epithelial thickness profile enables us to confidently operate on patients who will likely have been otherwise turned away for Laser Eye Surgery. Moreover, it provides us with unique capabilities for sizing posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs) and premium IOLs for lens surgery.
