Laser Eye Surgery is All About Trust, Says Harley Street Dentist
Laser Eye Surgery is a big deal for anyone. It’s not simply something you decide to do while walking down the street one day. You might have been considering the procedure for many years, or perhaps a good friend or colleague has just undergone the treatment. Whatever the origin of the thought, you’re now curious about a life without the drawbacks of contact lenses or glasses.
But the treatment requires thought and consideration, from deciding whether it’s the right choice for you to choosing the right clinic and surgeon. Moreover, the Laser Eye Surgery process should involve a thorough screening process to determine your suitability for the procedure. For these reasons, the length of time between deciding to look into Laser Eye Surgery to finding yourself in the operating room can vary significantly from patient to patient. Nevertheless, it is important to feel completely confident in your chosen clinic and surgeon before going ahead.
It was this that proved to be the stumbling block that prevented Harley Street dentist, Mark, from having the Laser Eye Surgery treatment he’d always wanted.
Discovering London Vision Clinic
Despite being curious about Laser Eye Surgery for many years, Mark Hughes had not felt the necessary level of trust and confidence in a clinic or surgeon to go ahead with treatment. That is, until he discovered London Vision Clinic.
“I had wanted to get my eyes done for practical reasons for – my work – and also for the obvious social reasons; but because of the implications on my profession, I had never before had enough trust in either the procedure or the person who would be carrying it out to go through with it,” explains Mark.
An expert in cosmetic and restorative dentistry, Mark had relied on glasses for his myopia (short-sightedness) since the age of 14. He had had his prescription added to each piece of the magnification and optical equipment necessary for his profession, but his eyesight continued to interfere with his work:
“This meant that I was constantly swapping glasses and magnification items and although I longed to be free of all that, it wasn’t until I met Dan Reinstein and the team at the London Vision Clinic that I felt the confidence to go ahead.
“As a fellow medical practitioner, I needed to know exactly what to expect and – after twenty years – this felt like the right time, the right person and the right place.”
Addressing a Complicated Prescription
The simple truth is that not everyone will be suitable for Laser Eye Surgery. Patient eligibility can be affected by a range of factors, including general and eye health and the severity of the prescription. However, with ongoing advances in the field, access to the latest technology means that correction is now an option for more people than ever before.
In the past, Mark had been told that his prescription would mean he should only expect limited outcomes: “Previously, I had been told that, because of my astigmatism and the severity of my prescription, I would only be able to expect a limited result; but Dan was able to show me that, with the latest techniques available at the London Vision Clinic, this was no longer the case.”
Not only was Mark thrilled with his results from Laser Eye Surgery, but he was pleased with the whole process.
“I was tremendously impressed with every aspect; I had chosen to have my operation early in the morning and – although I must have been the first in a long line of patients that day – I was made to feel as if I were the only one.
Mark continued: “I appreciated the calming and quiet atmosphere in the surgical area and the privacy and unhurried, professional way the procedure and post op medication was explained. And I loved all the little treats- like the chocolate and relaxing head and shoulder massage.
“The whole process was exceptionally smooth and efficient while each step was explained clearly by well-qualified and pleasant staff. The system was brilliantly organised and I knew that this was the level of patient service that I wanted for my own practice: a centre of absolute medical excellence.”
A couple of years later Mark launched the, Harley Street Dental Studio, in its own building at 52 Harley Street. With a hand-picked international team of dental clinicians, nurses and care coordinators, we are flattered at the nod to our own way of doing things here at London Vision Clinic.
A Family Affair
Mark wasn’t the only one paying attention to his LASIK experience at London Vision Clinic. His then-fiancé (now wife), Salima, was also keeping a close eye on the process and her partner’s outcomes. As a professional musician with a successful solo career playing the oboe, Salima was getting fed up with her own sight issues and wearing contact lenses on stage.
Just a few months after Mark’s treatment, Salima decided to follow his example and go with London Vision Clinic for her own vision correction – and just in time for their wedding!
Salima later switched careers to become a jeweller – a profession in which she appreciates here glasses-free vision. Having unaided sight and not needing to juggle specs with the detailed magnifying equipment required in the workplace has allowed her to enjoy her new career – and her new vision – on a whole other level.
