Things We Consider When Determining Your Laser Eye Surgery Suitability

If you’ve been considering whether it could be the right time to go ahead with Laser Eye Surgery, you might be wondering what factors could affect your suitability for treatment. The fact is, Laser Eye Surgery isn’t an option for everyone – but if you choose the right clinic, there is a good chance it could be for you.

So, let’s take a closer look at the things we consider when determining your suitability for Laser Eye Surgery, from your prescription to your overall health.

Laser Eye Surgery Suitability

While there are some individuals who are simply unable to have Laser Eye Surgery, whether due to their prescription or an underlying health condition, the fact is that this can vary significantly from clinic to clinic.

While some clinics may turn up to 20% of the patients they assess, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are unsuitable for Laser Eye Surgery. Rather, it simply means that that particular clinic is unable to treat them. For this reason, doing your research and choosing the right clinic can make all the difference.

At London Vision Clinic, we’re proud to be able to treat up to 98% of those who come to see us. So, why do so many more patients meet the conditions necessary for Laser Eye Surgery at our clinic? Well, there are several contributing factors:

  • Our expert surgeons are among the very best in the world.
  • We are not afraid of a challenge – we don’t only take on the simple, straightforward cases!
  • We offer specialist treatments that are often not available at other clinics.
  • Our doctors and surgeons take the time to really get to know your eyes and vision, and create a bespoke treatment plan.

Many Laser Eye Surgery clinics favour quick turnaround and consistent results. On top of this, many simply do not have the expertise or equipment required to tackle more complex or unusual cases. As a result, patients with more complicated prescriptions are often turned away, often believing they are simply not suitable candidates for treatment.

London Vision Clinic is different on both counts.

Factors Affecting Laser Eye Surgery Eligibility

Patients may be turned away by other clinics for one or both of the following reasons:

Their prescription is too high

It is true that your prescription can significantly impact your suitability for Laser Eye Surgery. However, at London Vision Clinic, our state-of-the-art screening and treatment processes means we are often able to treat very high prescriptions.

With the help of the Artemis Insight 100™ scanner, co-invented by our founder and expert surgeon Professor Dan Reinstein, we can map each individual layer of your cornea to within one micron – 1,000th of a millimetre. This level of accuracy is crucial when planning the treatment of very high prescriptions, as more corneal tissue will need to be removed. Being able to map the cornea in such detail means we know exactly how much tissue we can safely remove.

Laser Eye Surgery cannot treat the effects of ageing

Eventually, as we get older, almost everybody will succumb to the effects of ageing eyes. Even those who have had perfect vision all their lives will gradually notice a decline in their near and reading vision. This is known as presbyopia, or “old eye”.

For many years, Laser Eye Surgery was not considered a treatment option for this refractive error – and this is still the case at many clinics today. But not at London Vision Clinic. In fact, we have been treating presbyopia for almost 20 years!

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is a revolutionary Laser Eye Surgery technique that was developed by our very own surgeons. It involves correcting each eye in a sightly different way: one mainly for near vision and one mainly for distance vision. The brain is then able to combine these two images to provide clear vision across all distances, often without the need for glasses or contact lenses!

Will you be deemed suitable for Laser Eye Surgery?

In addition to your refractive error and prescription, our surgeons will consider your age, eye health, and overall health when determining your suitability for Laser Eye Surgery. All of this is assessed during the consultation stage of our Laser Eye Surgery process.

Even if you have been turned away by other clinics, there is a good chance we will be able to help. Of course, there is always a small chance that this isn’t the case. In these circumstances, we may be able to offer alternative treatments, such as clear lens exchange. At London Vision Clinic, we always take on cases on the basis of refractive error, risk/reward ratio, and the patient’s lifestyle and expectations.
