Working in and Around Harley Street – A Medical Centre of the World

Over the centuries, Harley Street has been known for being the home of clinicians providing world-class medical care to the super-rich and higher classes of society. It has been known as a medical hotspot for aristocrats, celebrities, and even royalty, with the likes of King George VI and Professor Stephen Hawking receiving treatment there.

Today, however, you are just as likely to meet a builder or a teacher as a monarch being treated on Harley Street. The area, which remains a world-renowned centre of medical excellence, has evolved from a haven exclusively for the upper classes to a diverse and affordable hub for all.

But the transformation of Harley Street can be better appreciated in numbers: In 1860, only 20 doctors called Harley Street home; today, the area is the base of over 2,000 clinics and medical practices, from dentists to Laser Eye Surgery clinics! To none has this shift been more apparent than to those who work in and around Harley Street every day.

A Centre of the Medical World

The buildings lining this Westminster street house refractive surgeons, chiropractors, plastic surgeons, gastroenterologists, ENT surgeons, cardiologists, psychiatrists, dermatologists, and an endless list of other highly sought-after medical specialists. Together, these personnel help to continue the impressive legacy of Harley Street.

This includes an estimated 1,500 practitioners and an additional 3,000 staff who work on Harley Street to deliver exceptional service and treatments every single day. You can bump into patients requiring special care for their hip, specialist dental work, and, of course, Laser Eye Surgery for refractive errors or deteriorating vision.

What Sets Harley Street Apart?

While other streets around the capital, such as Fleet Street or Saville Row, have largely evolved beyond their trademark, Harley Street has only become more prominent within the global medical landscape. There’s no wonder it has become known as the Laser Eye Surgery hub of the world, thanks to its unrivalled concentration of clinics.

Our own Harley Street story started with our founder and expert surgeon, Professor Dan Reinstein, who chose the area to open London Vision Clinic way back in 2002.

With an impressive CV, which includes helping to develop some groundbreaking Laser Eye Surgery technology, Professor Reinstein has become a prominent figure in the field. He has appeared as an expert on television programmes including BBC Breakfast, Extreme Makeover UK, and This Morning, starred on BBC Radio 4, and even written for publications such as The Times.

And yet, Dr Dan also finds time to live a normal life outside the clinic. By night, he even plays the saxophone at his local jazz club. But to ensure he stays at the top of his game, he also regulatly attends and contributes to meetings, journals, books, and anything else you can think of related to Laser Eye Surgery!

And the same can likely be said for many of the other professionals who work on Harley Street. Many spend their days changing the lives of patients, one surgery or treatment at a time. This dedication to delivering the very best medical care has been the driving force behind the facades of Harley Street for generations.

With such high-quality health services on offer, there’s no denying that treatments on Harley Street can still cost a pretty penny. However, with healthy competition between providers – many of which offer convenient finance options – treatments are often more affordable than you might think.
