Choosing Laser Eye Surgery for astigmatism

It’s often claimed that Laser Eye Surgery cannot treat astigmatism. And yet, at London Vision Clinic, we’ve been using laser surgery to treat astigmatism symptoms for many years. In the hands of an expert laser eye surgeon it’s possible to correct astigmatic vision using LASIK or PRK / LASEK.

You can find out if you’re a suitable candidate for astigmatism treatment at London Vision Clinic by contacting our team. Simply send us a message, give us a call, or arrange for us to call you back, and one of our Patient Care Coordinators will guide you through the process, answering any questions you may have and making sure you’re left with no worries or doubts.

What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is slightly more complex to treat than myopia or hyperopia (short-sightedness and long-sightedness) because it requires correction in more than one plane.

In myopia and hyperopia, the eye surgeon subtly reshapes what is essentially a normal-shaped, spherical cornea. But an astigmatic cornea is shaped more like a rugby ball than the normal sphere. This creates a flattened cone shape at the front of the eye.

As light enters at different angles through this cone, two points of focus are formed rather than one, causing you to see a blurred image. This is what is to blame for classic astigmatism symptoms such as blurred small print, difficulty reading, the inability to see both near and far without squinting, constant headache, and fatigue.

The conical shape of the cornea means that the laser eye surgeon must take account of every distortion, in every direction. Although this is certainly more complex than standard myopia or hyperopia, virtually all astigmatism symptoms are treatable by an expert surgeon using the right technology.

Here at London Vision Clinic, we routinely treat high astigmatism cases with Laser Eye Surgery.

In the short video below, Isabella, a previous patient of ours, describes her search for a Laser Eye Surgery provider, and tells us why she chose London Vision Clinic.

London Vision Clinic: independently rated as Excellent.

I can highly recommend LVC. All aspects of the press from the initial appointment, subsequent appointments, aftercare pack and treatment and the surgery is of the highest quality and far superior to what I expected when I decided to investigate laser eye surgery. As a person wearing glasses from age of 12 and hard contact lenses, due to astigmatism from the age of 21 with poor eyesight, is the most liberating experience ever. I want to thank everyone @ LVC that has been involved in my treatment for the high level of professionalism and care.”
