The Carl Zeiss Meditec VisuMax Laser

LASIK – also known as laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis – is the most commonly performed Laser Eye Surgery procedure. In fact, typically only around 15-20% of patients are considered ineligible for LASIK. In these cases, another treatment, such as PRK/LASEK or ReLEx SMILE, is likely suitable. But what all of these treatments have in common at London Vision Clinic is the use of the state-of-the-art Carl Zeiss VisuMax Femtosecond laser.

This groundbreaking laser employs high-performance femtosecond laser technology for superior precision, speed, and sensitivity. These features allow the Carl Zeiss VisuMax laser to offer the least discomfort and the fastest recovery time for our patients.

The Carl Zeiss Meditec VisuMax is the latest (3rd) generation femtosecond laser. It is more precise and energy-efficient than any other system and is also the only femtosecond laser that does not increase the pressure inside the eye – hence patients feel nothing during treatment. Because of its unique accuracy, the VisuMax is the only femtosecond laser that is suitable for the “keyhole” form of LASIK: ReLEx SMILE.

“The VisuMax was perceived as a femtosecond laser that would be accurate enough to be able to produce incisions within the stromal component of the cornea and stand alone as an individual, fully contained refractive surgical tool.

“The folks at Carl Zeiss Meditec recruited some of their top optical scientists in order to design the optics of this laser, not only so that the beam could be extremely tightly focused so that the drop-off in energy from the interface impact point, is very, very steep, meaning that there is very little eradication of the surrounding tissue that would produce heat. But also they designed a beam path which means that the energy transfer from the head of the laser all the way to the cornea of the patient is very efficient.”

The Carl Zeiss MEL 90 Excimer Laser

The Zeiss MEL 90 excimer laser was developed by a team of Laser Eye Surgery experts, including Professor Dan Reinstein to meet the needs for modern refractive surgery. The MEL90 offers incredibly accurate and auto-stabilised delivery, along with the fastest responses of any laser, and cutting-edge eye-tracking technology, without the need for constant calibration.

The Artemis Insight 100

Professor Reinstein also helped to develop the Artemis Insight 100 – the most accurate corneal scanner in the world. This impressive piece of technology was born out of Prof. Reinstein’s theory that ultrasound could be used to scan the surface of the cornea. Since its introduction, the Artemis has greatly improved the accuracy, safety, and outcomes of Laser Eye Surgery across the board. As Professor Dan explains in the video below, the Artemis Insight 100 is now invaluable in diagnosing eye conditions such as keratoconus.

In addition to measuring the thickness of the cornea, the Artemis Insight can also map the individual layers of the corneal tissue to an accuracy of 1 micron (1/1000th of a mm) and produce a 3D image of the eye. Being able to make accurate diagnoses with corneal scanning allows our surgeons to determine your overall suitability for Laser Eye Surgery and to take all the necessary precautions to ensure the most satisfactory outcome.
