LASIK Safety & Patient Satisfaction

LASIK is known as one of the most common—and safest—methods of refractive surgery to date. And now we have a comprehensive FDA study to confirm it.

The study set in stone what many of the worlds leading surgeons, as well as the vast majority of the 20 millions recipients of the surgery, have long believed to be true; that LASIK is safe, effective, and extremely cost-efficient.

The study involved surveying LASIK patients about their visual symptoms and overall quality of vision before, as well as three months after their surgery.

One of the most impressive results from the FDA study showed that 95% of respondents achieved 20/20 vision or higher following the surgery. But perhaps more surprising is the fact that symptoms such as halos, ghosting of images, glare, and star bursting actually decreased post-surgery in nearly a third of respondents.

What Is LASIK

LASIK is an advanced form of refractive surgery which falls into a group of treatments known as ‘surface procedures’. PRK and LASEK are also types of surface procedures which work in a similar way, but when it comes to risk, time in surgery, and recovery, LASIK trumps them both.

In LASIK, rather than displace the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) like in PRK or LASEK, the surgeon simply creates an ultra thin flap and folds it back to expose the bed of the cornea. The laser is then used to remove a precise, pre-set amount of corneal tissue before the flap is replaced, and the eye gets to work healing the area. The whole procedure takes around 15 minutes, with the flap effectively healing within only a few hours.

Improvement in vision is virtually instantaneous, the procedure is perfectly safe, and the majority of patients are back to work within 24 hours following surgery.

More than 90% of patients are suitable for LASIK surgery, including those who suffer from short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), presbyopia (ageing eye), and astigmatism (irregular shaped cornea).

Patient Satisfaction

The best way to communicate the safety and effectiveness of LASIK surgery is through hearing what patients themselves have to say. Here at London Vision Clinic, we maintain a rich collection of patient testimonials to help those considering treatment feel completely at ease.

We also believe in complete transparency and clarity when it comes to publishing our statistical results. Therefore, you can find all our results in clear, detailed, separated tables for you to easily make comparisons with other clinics.

Here are a few reassuring comments from past patients which help to get across the level of safety felt when receiving LASIK surgery:

“The keyhole LASIK Laser Eye Surgery really has been quite life changing for me. As someone who has never particularly tolerated contact lenses, I am delighted with the results and look forward to continuing to enjoy not wearing specs. The fact that all of the staff at LVC keep you fully informed throughout the journey (from initial consultation / procedure / aftercare) is particularly reassuring.”
