10 Annoying Things that Every Glasses Wearer Will Know

For those lucky enough to have never needed glasses, it can be easy to overlook just how much of an impact they can have on day-to-day life. While they might be extremely useful and, in some cases, even vital for performing everyday tasks, there’s no denying that wearing glasses comes with a huge number of drawbacks.

Do any of these ten annoying things sound familiar to you?

1. Foggy glasses in the kitchen – or any other warm or humid room…

The primary and, in fact, only purpose of standard glasses is to help us see better. So, it can become incredibly frustrating when the external lenses become fogged up, essentially blocking your vision of everything that is going on around you.

Whether it’s cooking the family dinner, walking into a humid pub or restaurant, or fumbling for your glasses after a warm bath, you can be sure that anywhere there is steam is not a good match for your specs.

2. Waking up and forgetting where you’ve left them…

Waking up with blurry vision is nothing new to a glasses wearer. But while this is usually quickly resolved by reaching for your specs on the bedside table, there are times when they are nowhere to be found

At first, you might react calmly, having a quick feel around on the floor or a rummage in your bag, but eventually, things begin to escalate. Before you know it, you’re retracing all your steps from the night before, charging through the house as fast as your restricted sight will allow, and making a mess everywhere you go. When you’re almost at the point of despair, you may look up and see them mockingly sitting on the bedside table after all.

3. Your prescription keeps changing

It can be easy to get too comfortable with your glasses and take for granted that your prescription is correct. You might have been happily wearing the same glasses for years. But then one day, you notice that your visual acuity isn’t as good as you thought it had been before. Perhaps you’ve been struggling to read text on your phone or computer or have been straining to read road signs.

Sounds like it’s time to arrange yet another eye test.

After the routine tests and examinations, your optician breaks the news: your prescription has changed. That means you’ll need a new pair of glasses if you’d like to see clearly – and we all know that comes at a cost!

4. Taking blind baths and showers

Taking off your glasses can feel like a relief in many situations. But when it comes to performing necessary tasks such as taking a shower or bath, things can become a little difficult – particularly if you have a high prescription. You need to take extra care when choosing between shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner. Shaving your legs can turn into an extreme sport, and dropping the soap is more of a headache than you would have thought possible.

But as we mentioned earlier, the alternative is fogged-up glasses that will likely leave you just as restricted!

5. Even buying sunglasses isn’t straightforward

Shopping sprees are often fun and spontaneous outings, allowing you to try out the latest fashion trends. But when it comes to eyewear, it can be easy to become jealous of your glasses-free friends who can try out any pair of stylish shades they choose. For you, choosing new sunglasses means forking out for a pair that will correct your sight in addition to protecting your eyes from the sun – and this can be expensive.

6. Making up a blurry face…

While wearing your glasses is vital for performing many daily tasks, there are some times that they simply get in the way. Putting on your make-up in the morning, for example, requires access to your eyes and the skin around them. Of course, without your glasses, it’s difficult to see exactly what you are doing… I’m sure your mascara doesn’t look that bad, though!

7. The need for additional prescription eyewear

Okay, so this one may not apply to everyone, but for those of us who enjoy activities such as swimming or are required to wear protective eyewear at work, this can mean yet another headache. You can’t simply slip on a pair of standard goggles; no, you’ll have to fork out, yet again, for a pair that actually allows you to see while you’re in the water!

8. You can be restricted in what sports and activities you can do

Speaking of swimming, for those less passionate about the sport, buying a pair of prescription goggles can understandably seem like a waste of money. Of course, opting out can come with restrictions about what you can do. Even activities that don’t require specialist eyewear can be a no-go. After all, you really want to be able to see when taking part in activities such as football or boxing – unfortunately, wearing glasses isn’t exactly convenient for these activities!

9. Everyone asking if they can try them on

Okay, we get it: For some people, glasses are simply a novelty, viewed as a form of “dressing up” and having a good laugh. But for those who actually need them, being made temporarily blurry-eyed while the people around you take turns trying on your specs isn’t exactly the best idea of a good time…

10. The constant fear of losing or breaking them

Let’s get to arguably the most annoying thing about wearing glasses: the constant fear of leaving them on the bus or unwittingly sitting on them. As external visual aids that are separate from our bodies, losing your glasses is a constant worry. Did you leave them at work? Will they be there tomorrow? Or are they gone for good, leaving you to shell out yet another small fortune for a replacement pair? Only time will tell!
